Hillerød, forty-five minutes north of Copenhagen, is dominated by Frederiksborg Castle: the great Renaissance palace built by Christian IV across three islets of a lake, often called the Versailles of the North. Today it houses the Museum of National History, its chapel still used for royal ceremonies and its baroque garden restored to its eighteenth-century parterres. FFGR Denmark arranges private chapel viewings, lake boat crossings to the castle, and combined day excursions through North Zealand's castle belt: Fredensborg, the Queen's spring residence, sits fifteen minutes further. The surrounding Gribskov forest offers some of Zealand's most restorative driving.
