Helsingør, fifty minutes up the coast from Copenhagen, guards the narrowest point of the Øresund — the strait where for centuries every ship paid the Sound Dues beneath the cannon of Kronborg Castle. Kronborg, the Renaissance fortress that Shakespeare immortalised as Elsinore in Hamlet, is a UNESCO World Heritage site; FFGR Denmark arranges private after-hours visits of its ballroom and casemates, summer performances of Hamlet in the courtyard, and the M/S Maritime Museum designed by Bjarke Ingels around an old dry dock. From here the ferry to Helsingborg in Sweden takes twenty minutes — a discreet way to cross between kingdoms.
